MacRowdies & John Rogers

John Rogers will be calling the contra dances to the music of North Carolina-based The MacRowdies on Sunday.

The MacRowdies are:
• Mara Shea on fiddle
• Pete Campbell on keyboard

August 2: Category 5 and Eric Harris

Category 5 and Eric Harris

A collision of classical strings and African rhythms is just half of the musical storm blowing your way when Category 5 returns to Gainesville. The storm force builds with their high energy jigs and reels - a force to be reckoned with in air conditioned comfort.

Stirring up a storm in the caller's corner is Eric Harris, taking a turn from his other gig at Sea Life Orlando - spreading cheer and enthusiasm across the state.

Potluck Poachers and Richard Hopkins 7-10 pm Sat. Jan. 17

Potluck Poachers

Mixing a pair of former Mainiacs and a trio of Dementors creates some mid-winter mischief to heat up our next dance. Starting contra-musician life at the University of Maine, Pete and Eleta join three of the Dementors members to do some Potluck Poaching and down-home contra music playing for our next dance.

Our caller was so hooked on dancing in grammar school that he had the Virginia Reel and some squares at his wedding. Richard Hopkins, a "mostly-retired" epidemiologist, will be sharing his lifelong love of Contra and Squares in the caller's spot.

Saturday Dec 20: Kumquats at Large & Sam Rotenberg

Kumquats-At-Large & Sam Rotenberg

Closing out the contra year, our ever-popular "old acquaintances", Kumquats at Large will play a dance not likely to be forgotten! Let's join together in dancing out 2014.

Our caller, Sam Rotenberg, is taking a break from calling In Philly and various other frozen locales to warm up a dance for us. Having also called at NEFFA and Pinewoods and being an English Country dancer, an interesting dance is sure to be afoot.

Nov 15: Goosebumps with Alice Milmoe -- 7 pm at MLK Ctr.

Alice Milmoe

Different band, time and place!

From historic St. Augustine, Goosebumps, a Morse family labor of love, play their roots-inspired tunes to warm a cool November evening. Mom and the boys are a-tunin the strings for a night to remember.

Alice Milmoe, hopes to present dance figures with a difference. Or different figures. She'll keep you movin' too.

The Goosebumps are Matthew Morse, fiddle; Aaron Morse, fiddle and mandolin; Seth Morse, guitar; Dawn Morse, bass.

October 18: 'Wind that Shakes the Barley' with caller Hilton Baxter

Hilton Baxter

Autumn winds a-blowin thru the fields unleash rhythm with melodies that follow in natural harmony. Echoing, amplifying and multiplying nature's cadence, Wind that Shakes the Barley, with the unique melody of hammered dulcimer will enchant dancers this October dance.

Our caller, Hilton Baxter, having called for touring bands such as Great Bear Trio brings his easy-going style to Gainesville. A long-time caller from upstate NY, he "will get everyone moving to the music quickly and with confidence".

7 pm Sept 20: 'Comes When Called' with Susie Rudder

Comes When Called

Contra-Fusion is coming our way with "percussion toys" and "wild and crazy recorder improv". Layered with African rhythm and big-band strings, 'Comes When Called' promises to "delight dance floor denizens" with their Celtic, modern and old-time tunes.

Our caller, on a whistle stop in Gainesville from her world travels and budding ukulele career is Susie Rudder. Susie is also the house caller for the Melrose dance on 2nd Fridays.

September 7: Contra Yazoo Kickstarts - John Rogers calling

Yazoo Kickstarts

Git your Yazoo out and Kickstart some fine Fall dancing and great music. Yup, music-ing fer us, are the Yazoo Kickstarts with Mike Stapleton on fiddle, Bill Paine - mandolin & guitar, Marietta Massey - banjo, David Massey - fiddle & piano.

Our caller, John Rogers, usually booking talent in Cocoa and Melbourne, steps out in front of the spotlight this Sunday. John is an "almost FL native who mis-spent his youth not dancing...until he came upon a group that called out instructions." A rousing Gainesville welcome to John.

Aug 31: Advanced Contra Dance - Kumquats at Large with JoLaine Jones-Pokorney

Kumquats at Large called by JoLaine Pokorney

Of the many Kumquat varieties, those At Large are one of the tastiest. Five years in the making, the Kumquats At Large serve up Rich Crew (fiddle and recorder), Sarah Mitchell (penny whistle, flute, drum, foot percussion and hammered dulcimer) and Bill Dudley, guitar.

JoLaine Jones-Pokorney adds her unique spice to the mix, calling dances to challenge and please your dance palate.

August 16: The Gadabouts with caller Stan Prince

The Gadabouts

The Gadabouts are dropping in for an evening of "percussive, foot-tappin', yes ma'am, shake your booty good time" Contra Dancing! Get your fix of old time music gone amok interspersed with zesty and beautiful cajun waltzes.

Calling for the gadabouts is Stan Prince, whose believes that "dancers are there to dance to the music and not to listen to the caller once they’ve learned the dance". He has been calling for ten years and dancing a whole lot longer.
