A collision of classical strings and African rhythms is just half of the musical storm blowing your way when Category Five returns to Gainesville. The storm force builds with their high energy jigs and reels - just in time to dance off a day of feasting.

At the center of the tempest is our caller and jester, Jonathan King.

Category Five is:
• Sarah Mitchell on flute, hammered dulcimer, and percussion;
• Kathie Aagaard on fiddle;
• John McEwen on Irish banjo, tenor guitar, percussion; and
• David Massey on keyboard.

Brace yourself for a "contra dance wall of sound" of French Canadian, New England and Southern music. Gainesville's own JoLaine Jones-Pokorney will be calling the dances to the music of Possum Trot, an inter-generational band that "blends the new and the old" in a swashbuckling sensation.

Possum Trot is:
* Pete Sucsy, banjo and guitar;
* Laura Price, fiddle;
* Benny McDowell, piano;
* Eleta Sucsy, penny whistle; and
* Kai Sucsy, percussion.

The Smoky Hollow String Band is droppin' in from Tallahassee. Inspired by the mountains, hollers and flat-lands of bygone days, three veteran musicians bring you hard drivin', no holds barred traditional music for a special evening of air conditioned dancing.

Gainesville’s own inscrutable Jonathan King will amaze and entertain you with energetic dance patterns that will leave you breathless and hollering for more.

Jonathan King and Wind That Shakes The Barley

Autumn winds a-blowin thru the fields unleash rhythm with melodies that follow in natural harmony. Echoing, amplifying and multiplying nature's cadence, 'Wind that Shakes the Barley', with the unique melody of hammered dulcimer will enchant dancers this October dance.

Tempering the blustering winds, calling our dances will be Jonathan King, Gainesville's own high energy dance caller.

Feb. 1: Whistling Anchovy Brothers and Jonathan King

An award winning fiddler and a local banjo plucker join another talented duo to enchant your dance muse. Hailing from Gainesville, Tampa and St. Augustine the New! and Improved! Whistling Anchovy Brothers will surely surprise and delight us all.

The Whistling Anchovy Brothers are Bill Paine (mandolin), Mike Stapleton (Banjo), David Massey (piano) and Allen Hood (fiddle).

Our caller, Jonathan King, also known to be full of surprises, is well known to our dance community - and beyond!

June 29: Yazoo Kickstarts called by Jonathan King

Can mathematicians count and call contra dances at the same time? Come find out Sunday June 29 when Jonathan King guides us down the rabbit hole through choice contra-ptions of contra Wonderland.

Dances and figures from, or beyond, your wildest imagination may appear on the dance floor before you have a chance to cry 'help'! Come, stretch your dancing skills--and your mind--in the company of other daring dancers!

Playing for our dance will be a local favorite The Yazoo Kickstarts with Bill Paine, Mike Stapleton, Marietta Massey and David Massey.

November 16 - 17 Contra Dance Double-Whammy

November 16 and 17 gets a double-whammy contra dance in Gainesville! Saturday evening, November 16, we have visiting talent from Atlanta - "Whistlin Rufus" and caller Doug Singleton at the Thelma Boltin Center, and Sunday afternoon is the University of Florida contra dance club featuring Jonathan King calling and "Just Twistin' Hay".
