March 29: Advanced contra with Frances and Friends & caller Frannie Marr

Frannie Marr

Frances, Sarah and Bill, with their "lilting tunes and spirited arrangements" will play dance tunes to tell your friends about. These "well-seasoned" musicians are "sure to add spice to your dance experience!"

Dancing in California, Frannie Marr started her calling career in elementary school - teaching her students. A caller in the 2014 Catapult! National Showcase, she prides herself on her "quick walk-throughs, efficient calling, and letting the dance and music flow".

Saturday March 21: The Dunehoppers with Alice Milmoe

The Dunehoppers

Saint Augustine jumps with history - from it's Spanish founding to an early winter retreat to modern times as the home of the famed and esteemed Dunehoppers. With award wining fiddling and equally engaging rhythm, percussion and even more strings, their melodic contra will keep you on your feet.

On your feet, says Alice from Apopka, with an encore performance in the callers spot, and a retinue of different dances. Ms. Milmoe's calling lineage boasts history of it's own.

March 1 Rode Skollars and Stan Prince

Budding trees and fresh breezes harken seasonal change. Change in contra bands is more subtle - The Rode Skollers, formerly known as the Road Scholars - will do their best to live up to their new image this Sunday.

Anchoring us in this sea of change, is our caller Stan Prince. Fresh from co-hosting the 20th annual Snow Ball, Stan brings us his longtime love of the dance, some old favorites and perhaps a new gem.

Feb. 1: Whistling Anchovy Brothers and Jonathan King

Jonathan and Ruth King

An award winning fiddler and a local banjo plucker join another talented duo to enchant your dance muse. Hailing from Gainesville, Tampa and St. Augustine the New! and Improved! Whistling Anchovy Brothers will surely surprise and delight us all.

The Whistling Anchovy Brothers are Bill Paine (mandolin), Mike Stapleton (Banjo), David Massey (piano) and Allen Hood (fiddle).

Our caller, Jonathan King, also known to be full of surprises, is well known to our dance community - and beyond!

Potluck Poachers and Richard Hopkins 7-10 pm Sat. Jan. 17

Potluck Poachers

Mixing a pair of former Mainiacs and a trio of Dementors creates some mid-winter mischief to heat up our next dance. Starting contra-musician life at the University of Maine, Pete and Eleta join three of the Dementors members to do some Potluck Poaching and down-home contra music playing for our next dance.

Our caller was so hooked on dancing in grammar school that he had the Virginia Reel and some squares at his wedding. Richard Hopkins, a "mostly-retired" epidemiologist, will be sharing his lifelong love of Contra and Squares in the caller's spot.

Jan 4: Emily Ann Thompson Band and Angela DeCarlis

Emily Ann Thompson Band called by Angele DeCarlis

A Florida tour favorite, spilling over with upbeat, high-energy dance tunes, the Emily Ann Thompson Band returns to Gainesville. A national touring artist with three albums and another in the works, the contra-thrall has electrified the air in past performances.

"Super-stoked" to work with Emily Ann again, is Angela DeCarlis, a "local gal returning from the Big City". The combination has packed the hall in previous tours. Angela's recent adventures include calling dances in the Boston area and beyond.

December 21 - Vicki Morrison and Smoky Hollow String Band

Vicki Morrison

Vicki Morrison from Tallahassee will be calling the dances to the music of "Smoky Hollow String Band", 8pm, December 21 at the Thelma Boltin Center, 516 NE 2nd Ave. Introductory workshop for beginning dancers starts at 7:30pm and is highly recommended! Experienced dancers, be there early to partner with those newcomers and help them have the time of their lives!

August 16: The Gadabouts with caller Stan Prince

The Gadabouts

The Gadabouts are dropping in for an evening of "percussive, foot-tappin', yes ma'am, shake your booty good time" Contra Dancing! Get your fix of old time music gone amok interspersed with zesty and beautiful cajun waltzes.

Calling for the gadabouts is Stan Prince, whose believes that "dancers are there to dance to the music and not to listen to the caller once they’ve learned the dance". He has been calling for ten years and dancing a whole lot longer.

December 29 Advanced Dance with "The Gadabouts" and Stan Prince

The Gadabouts

Comes celebrate the New Year a couple of days early with "The Gadabouts" and caller Stan Prince. The Advanced Dance is for those dancers who have attended at least three contra dances in the past and feel comfortable with the most common contra dance figures. While a new dancer will not be turned away, this dance does not accommodate them as do our regular dances. There will be no introductory workshop and the evening may not necessarily begin with easy dances and build up in complexity. If you want to introduce a newbie to contra, please bring her/him to one of the regular dances.
