The Smoky Hollow String String Band is droppin' in from Tallahassee. Inspired by the the mountains, hollers and flat-lands of bygone days, three veteran musicians bring you hard drivin', no holds barred traditional music for an evening of joyous and sprightly dancing.

Vicki Morrison, a contra dancer for eight years, and caller for five, aims for a joyful dance experience for both new and experienced dancers. She calls dances that flow well and are fun for everyone.

A holiday season extravaganza of a couple of Grammy-nominated musicians, a champion old-time fiddler sprinkled with a few multi-instrumentalists graces our Dec. 6 dance. The Quincy Qutups lays claim to over a hundred musician-years of entertaining pleasure.

Andy Kane is known for his easy instructional walk-throughs and sharing the groove with southern tunes. He has been a featured dance caller at Gamblefest, Pinewoods Music and Dance Camp, and the Florida Folk Festival.

Nov 29th Advanced Contra: Category Five + Joey Norton

Category Five is: • Sarah Mitchell on flute, hammered dulcimer, and percussion; • Kathie Aagaard on fiddle; • John McEwen on Irish banjo, tenor guitar, percussion; and • David Massey on keyboard.

A collision of classical strings and African rhythms is just half of the musical storm blowing your way when Category 5 returns to Gainesville. The storm force builds with their high energy jigs and reels - just in time to dance off a day of feasting.

Anchoring the tempest is our caller, Joey Norton.

Category Five is:

Jonathan King and Wind That Shakes The Barley

Autumn winds a-blowin thru the fields unleash rhythm with melodies that follow in natural harmony. Echoing, amplifying and multiplying nature's cadence, 'Wind that Shakes the Barley', with the unique melody of hammered dulcimer will enchant dancers this October dance.

Tempering the blustering winds, calling our dances will be Jonathan King, Gainesville's own high energy dance caller.

Nov 1st: Contra The Gadabouts with John Rogers Sticky

The Gadabouts with caller John Rogers

The Gadabouts are dropping in for an evening of "percussive, foot-tappin', yes ma'am, shake your booty good time" Contra Dancing! Get your fix of old time music gone amok interspersed with zesty and beautiful cajun waltzes.

Our caller, John Rogers misspent his youth and much of his adulthood avoiding dance situations because they felt foreign. How "sweet it was to find a dance form that hollered out instructions while you were doing it". John will be hollerin' fer us.

Nov. 1: Piper & Kurt's Irish contra dance wedding

Dear all contra and Irish dancers! Kurt Seaburg and Piper Call will be tying the knot on Sunday, November 1st at the GODS contra dance (during the break at ~5:30 pm) in a brief ceremony conducted by JoLaine Jones-Pokorney.

You are all most welcome to come and enjoy the contra dance and see Kurt and Piper get officially hitched! The dance runs from 4-7 pm and takes place at the Thelma Boltin Center in Gainesville, 516 NE 2nd Avenue and cost for the dance is $10.

Oct 17: Terra Ceia Twisters & JoLaine Jones-Pokorney

For the first time in Gainesville, the Terra Ceia Twisters will string us along on a voyage of ‘funked’ up traditional tunes. A trio of classroom refugees, all strings and a flute, they will be sure to please.

Partnering with our new friends is a familiar face to our dance, JoLaine Jones-Pokorney in the caller's spot.

September 19: Possum Trot & Gary Arthur

Possum Trot,

Brace yourself for a "contra dance wall of sound" of French Canadian, New England and Southern music. Possum Trot, an inter-generational band, "blends the new and the old" in a swashbuckling sensation.

When not helping first graders learn gardening, Gary Arthur is soliciting tips himself. About gardening that is. Warmed up from a recent Melrose engagement, he will strut his stuff for us.

Possum Trot is Anthony Pilla on fiddle, Laura Price on fiddle, Benny McDowell on piano, Pete Sucsy on banjo & guitar, Eleta Sucsy on penny whistle, Kai Sucsy on percussion.
