Advanced Contra-Fusion is coming our way with "percussion toys" and "wild and crazy recorder improv". Layered with African rhythm and big-band strings, 'Comes When Called' promises to "delight dance floor denizens" with their Celtic, modern and old-time tunes.

Calling advanced delights, JoLaine Jones-Pokorney will show us the way through the contra-fusion and pulsating rhythms.

Waltzing in with a Kickstarter-funded CD is the Zizette family - Toss The Possum. Laura, a classically trained pianist and Rob, a fiddling physics major, weave "lyrical, driving and energetic" dance tunes. Charlie, "Papa Possum", is behind the sound board and the wheel of the van. Driving in from Tallahassee, Vicki Morrison, on a whistle stop of her world tour, may be practicing New Zealand contra calls for her upcoming trip. Stay tuned.

A collision of classical strings and African rhythms is just half of the musical storm blowing your way when Category 5 returns to Gainesville. The storm force builds with their high energy jigs and reels - a force to be reckoned with in air conditioned comfort.

Stirring up a storm in the caller's corner is Eric Harris, taking a turn from his other gig at Sea Life Orlando - spreading cheer and enthusiasm across the state.

Brace yourself for a "contra dance wall of sound" of French Canadian, New England and Southern music. Possum Trot, an inter-generational band, "blends the new and the old" into a musical melange. Dance and enthrall in air-conditioned comfort!

Blending dance gypsy experience with contra joy, Rona Wiener calls an engaging program for all levels of dancers. Rona's enthusiasm for the dance embraces teaching workshops for a thriving contra community .

July 5: Rode Skollars pickup band + JoLaine Jones-Pokorney

Our entertainment on Sunday shares the surprise of a fireworks finale. The Rode Skollars Pickup! band, while not promising pyrotechnics, will fill the stage with both new and familiar faces. Whether on the stage or on the floor, all comers are welcome!*

Our caller, JoLaine Jones-Pokorney may have some of her own surprises to cast out to the dance floor.

The Rode Skollars is: Marion Lasley on guitar, Lloyd Baldwin on fiddle and banjo, Mike Stapleton on fiddle and banjo, and Bill Paine on mandolin.

The Gadabouts are dropping in for an evening of "percussive, foot-tappin', yes ma'am, shake your booty good time" Contra Dancing! Get your fix of old time music gone amok interspersed with zesty and beautiful cajun waltzes.

Calling for the Gadabouts is Stan Prince, who believes that dancers wish to hear only music once they’ve learned the dance. Next week, Stan hosts the June Bug Bash in Tampa featuring the New England band Party of Three.

May 31: John Rogers calls advanced contra with Kumquats at Large

Following the Folk Festival with more homegrown delights, Kumquats at Large promises to turn a languid Sunday afternoon into a Hoppin' John of a dance occasion. Advanced dancing in air-conditioned comfort!

Our caller, John Rogers, savored the sweetness of "finding a dance form that hollered out instructions while you were doing it. It was like having on-board navigation." Any comments on his dance navigation are welcome!
