July 19 Whistlin' Rufus and Doug Singleton

Whistlin' Rufus

The dance delight continues with Atlanta quartet Whistlin Rufus and their "fast, energetic, interesting dance music". Having played for years around the Southeast and Midwest, this is a return engagement for our dance. Do not miss the opportunity to get your Contra on, in air-conditioned comfort on a sprung dance floor.

Calling for Whistlin Rufus is Doug Singleton, a long time caller and active in the Atlanta Contra community.

Whistlin Rufus is: Ann Whitley on fiddle, Doug Olsen, mandolin, Cindy Olsen, bass and Matt Levine, guitar.

Sept 21 - "Bashful Ramblers" and Gary Arthur

Gary Arthur will be calling the dances to the music of "Bashful Ramblers", 8pm, September 21 at the Thelma Boltin Center, 516 NE 2nd Ave. Introductory workshop for beginning dancers starts at 7:30pm and is highly recommended! Experienced dancers, be there early to partner with those newcomers and help them have the time of their lives!

August 3, 2014 - Category 5 and Vicki Morrison - Contra Dance

Category Five with Vicki Morrison on August 3, 2014

A collision of classical strings and African rhythms is just half of the musical storm blowing your way when Category 5 returns to Gainesville. The storm force builds with their high energy jigs and reels - predictions are for few dry dancers on the floor.

Anchoring the tempest is our caller, Vicki Morrison, who advocates contra dancing as the answer to world peace.

Category 5 is: Sarah Mitchell on flute, hammered dulcimer, percussion, Kathie Aagaard (of the Florida Orchestra) on fiddle, John McEwen - Irish banjo, tenor guitar, percussion, David Massey - keyboard.

Sept 29 - ADVANCED Dance

Ron Buchanan

Every fifth Sunday, the GODS holds an Advanced Dance. What does that mean? There will be no introductory workshop and the dances will not cater to beginning dancers. If you have been to at least three regular dances, you are welcome to join us at the Advanced Dance! This is a great way to increase your dance skills! This Sunday, September 29, Ron Buchanan from Pittsburgh will be our caller. Ron is a much sought-after caller across the country so don't miss out. Playing the tunes will be "Hot Potatoes." Suggested donation is $8/$5 for students and under 21.

August 16: The Gadabouts with caller Stan Prince

The Gadabouts

The Gadabouts are dropping in for an evening of "percussive, foot-tappin', yes ma'am, shake your booty good time" Contra Dancing! Get your fix of old time music gone amok interspersed with zesty and beautiful cajun waltzes.

Calling for the gadabouts is Stan Prince, whose believes that "dancers are there to dance to the music and not to listen to the caller once they’ve learned the dance". He has been calling for ten years and dancing a whole lot longer.
